Medical Officer (HPC / MO 2)


The Medical Services Branch of the Jamaica Constabulary Force welcomes applications from suitably qualified applicants to fill the vacant post of Medical Officer (HPC/MO2) within the Medical Services Branch of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

Job Purpose

The Medical Officer is responsible for assessing, evaluating and prescribing treatment for the patients/clients through the Medical Services Branch; making appropriate referrals for further treatment that cannot be managed appropriately in the branch.

Education and Experience

  • MBBS degree or equivalent in Medicine
  • Graduation from an accredited Medical School, plus five (5) years relevant experience or two (2) years experience and an acceptable Post-graduate qualification (i.e. any relevant diploma).

 

Key responsibility areas

Technical/Professional responsibilities

  • Manages a diversity of health-related conditions among patients, including physical examinations, assessments; diagnoses and treatment for members of the JCF and their immediate family members;
  • Prescribes appropriate treatment regimen as appropriate to assesses medical conditions;
  • Refers patients to specialists and relevant patient care providers as appropriate;
  • Documents pertinent information in patients docket;
  • Conducts medical examination of Force applicants;
  • Conducts examination of applicants for re-enlistment;
  • Assists in providing clinical input to wellness programme and its periodic fine-tuning;
  • Conducts consultation on First Aid referrals and supervises  the work of all the first-aiders
  • Provides on-call services after normal working hours in cases of emergency;
  • Provides pertinent information to the to the Clinical Director for him to provide guidance to the Commissioner of Police on matters pertaining to police health;
  • Sits on various committees that craft health related policies within the JCF;
  • Provides supervision for  the Family Nurse Practitioner;
  • Coordinates a number of health promotion programmes - vaccination, Cancer Screenings, Blood PSA, Blood Lead Levels, Lifestyle Management;
  • Contributes to the design of proposals for Gym programme addiction cessation;
  • Visits to various police departments to assess risk factors to health;
  • Goes out with healthy lifestyle programmes (health fairs) and take referrals after screening;
  • Assists with the Curriculum Development and Learning Experiences of recruits and police on various health related topics;
  • Liaises with nearby health departments, hospitals and the Ministry of Health on relevant information and partnerships, particularly on emerging and re-emerging diseases as well as topical health matters.

Other Responsibilities

  • Perform other related functions assigned from time to time.

 

Special Licensing or Certification necessary

  • Evidence of registration by the Medical Council of Jamaica
  • Annual Practising Certificate

Required Technical Competencies

  • Knowledge of the National Health Policy.
  • Knowledge of Public Health Laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical standards for the delivery of medical care.
  • Knowledge of current principles, methods and procedures for the delivery of medical evaluation, diagnosis and treatment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent knowledge of Health Care Delivery to Uniform Group and patient care.
  • Ability to use Quality Assurance tools to monitor quality of health service delivery.
  • Ability to observe, assess and record symptoms, reactions and progress.

 

Special Conditions

  • Required to work beyond normal working hours.
  • Required to work occasionally on weekends and Public Holidays.

 

Authority

  • Prioritize medical emergencies and take decisive action to preserve lives as necessary.
  • Divulge sensitive patient information to specialists and other health service providers within the guidelines established by the Branch and Ministry of Health.

 

Note

Salary range: $2,320,094 - $2,757,863 per annum and any allowance(s) attached to the post.
